The Greater Reno-Tahoe Region Strategic Advantage

A region that works for business

Greater Reno-Tahoe's business climate is on the rise. The area is primed for businesses - large or small - to grow and become a staple in the community. With room for expansion, a wonderful quality of life, and the benefits of Nevada's tax structure, it's a wonder why a business would choose anywhere else. The region is centrally located to major western cities including San Francisco, Portland, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas and Los Angeles all within a day's drive.

Greater Reno-Tahoe is a diverse region of eight distinct counties located in the northwestern portion of Nevada. A meaningful sense of community binds the region. With Reno/Sparks to the north, Fernley to the east, Dayton to the southwest, and Carson City to the south, each offers its own unique benefits for your business. Visit our communities' page for more information.

The region offers an emerging business climate with a balanced life pace. The four vibrant seasons of recreation, arts and culture makes this region an attractive place to build or locate a workforce.

Washoe County

The Washoe County area is outwardly pro-business and continues to expand as numerous large name industries and corporations call the area home. With a population of approximately 380,000 the area offers the essence of a close-knit community while offering the amenities available in a big city. High quality of life is enhanced by quality education. The area enjoys four complete seasons which enhance the multitude of activities in the area. Humboldt Economic Development Authority
Humboldt Development Authority (Humboldt County)
www.hdanv.org

Nevada is known far and wide as a prime location for business.  With no corporate or personal income tax, no inventory tax, and a great business climate, the state is ranked time and time again as one of the best business locations in the nation.  The incentives of doing business in Nevada are expansive. Nevada boasts one of the most liberal tax structures in the nation and from a tax-planning perspective, the return on investment in the form of tax saving dollars can be enormous.

Humboldt County and the City of Winnemucca have all of these advantages and more.  With the lowest property taxes and sales tax rates in the state, we offer advantages that Las Vegas or the Reno-Tahoe area can’t match, without the hassles, traffic, or high cost of living found in the urban centers of the state.

Winnemucca lies on the most important east-west transportation corridor in North America and its location has made it a transportation hub since the California Trail was in use and the first transcontinental railroad was constructed.  Located equidistant from the ever growing markets and ports around the San Francisco Bay Area, and the growing metropolis of Salt Lake City, and with easy access north to Boise, Idaho, and south to Las Vegas, the city is truly in the center of the intermountain west.  Interstate highways, two railroad lines, advanced high speed communications systems, and a modern municipal airport capable of handling aircraft up to Boeing 737’s provide the connections.

Lander Economic Development Authority
Lander Economic Development Authority (Lander County)
www.landercounty.org

Lander County is ideally situated in the middle of Nevada, and... in the MIDDLE OF EVERYWHERE! Lander County is abundant in natural resources, non-renewable and renewable, to develop business, power business and expand business. The climate in Lander County ranges from alpine to high desert - perfect for business location or relocation and ideal for the families that make businesses work. Lander County offers hard-to-find opportunities for business location or relocation such as: abundant, affordable commercial and industrial property available for development; easy and efficient access to air, highway and rail transportation; small communities with excellent educational facilities, quality medical services, low crime rates, beautiful scenery with unrivaled recreational opportunities; and, affordable housing and real estate.

Targeted Markets
Light Manufacturing - availability of skilled workforce, available manufacturing sites, effective and efficient access to major transportation infrastructure, access to West Coast and Intermountain markets.
Communication Industry - immediate access to high-speed communication infrastructure (microwave and broadband) present within Lander County.
Chemical Manufacturing and Distribution - available manufacturing and storage sites, effective and efficient access to major transportation infrastructure (8 rail sidings in place within a 12-mile radius of Battle Mountain, support industry to agriculture and mining (Lander County's primary industries).
Dairy Cattle and Milk Production - availability of large tracts of pasture land, extension of the agricultural industry (prevalent in Lander County), abundant availability of water, effective and efficient access to major transportation infrastructure (Interstate Highway 80).
Transportation and Warehousing - enhanced development of an established industry within Lander County (trucking), effective and efficient access to major transportation infrastructure (Interstate Highway 80; U.S. Highway 50), two well-developed General Aviation Airports (Battle Mountain Airport {BAM} and Austin Airport), abundant storage and warehousing sites available throughout Lander County.
Geothermal Resource Development - enhanced development of an abundant natural resource within Lander County, sufficient access to electrical power transmission lines for large-scale electric power production, widespread access to geothermal sites throughout the County.

The Lander County workforce is characterized as being young, educated, highly skilled and diversified. Marketing efforts for business location or relocation to Lander County are best focused on industries which employ a younger, skilled workforce in early- to mid-career status The targeting of mining and mining cluster or mining support industries is intuitive yet counter-productive in developing a sustainable, long-term economic base for the county's communities and residents. The relatively high wages paid workers in the mining industry increases the difficulty in attracting business and industry to Lander County. Fierce 'competition' for a limited number of skilled workers increases with the differential in compensation packages offered by competing industries.

White Pine Economic Diversification Council
White Pine Economic Diversification Council (White Pine County)
www.elynevada.net

White Pine County enjoys the combination of a relaxed, rural lifestyle and a progressive approach to business and industrial development.  At the crossroads of US Highways 50 and 93, the County is centrally located in the inter-mountain west between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.  The County is moving forward with existing economic sectors including mining, agriculture, metal fabrication, and tourism industries.  It is at the center of an emerging energy development cluster with two large coal-fired electrical power plants, transmission lines, reconstruction of the Nevada Northern Short Line Railroad, and seven wind energy projects in varying stages of the permitting process. We can offer your business affordable, reliable electric power, a County owned and administered Industrial Park, and a County Revolving Loan Fund to encourage business development.  We are proud of our full service business community and one-stop shop for building, planning, and economic development.  We can offer your employees affordable housing, exemplary schools, outstanding medical services, and friendly, small town way of life. We are sure they will enjoy the outdoor recreation opportunities including mountain biking, hiking and backpacking, trophy big game hunting and fishing, and cross country skiing within minutes of town.

White Pine Count Targeting Strategies include energy development, metal fabrication, support services to mining and construction, home based businesses, and future development of the railroad.

Energy Development:  Availability of land, water, air shed, the Nevada Northern Railroad, and community support attracted coal fired power projects to the County.  Wind and solar resources and the transmission capacity to be built by the coal projects are attracting interest from renewable energy projects.  The energy development projects will generate jobs that offer wages higher than the state’s industrial average and with opportunities for advancement, business activity, opportunities to attract auxiliary industries, and tax revenues for White Pine County and eastern Nevada and they will help to provide energy resources to support economic development throughout the state.

Support Services for Mining and Construction:  White Pine County’s mining industry has historically been its economic mainstay.  While the County strives to diversify its economy it continues to work with current growth of mining activity and to explore all avenues of providing the industry with products and services.  White Pine County has several potential large construction projects in the next several years including mine expansions, energy projects, transmission lines, reconstruction of the Nevada Northern Railroad, and the Southern Nevada Water Authority pipeline. The County is assisting local businesses to be able to provide support services for large construction projects.  Both mining and construction provide business opportunities and jobs that can be filled locally rather than bringing products and services from out of the area.

Home Based Businesses:  One of the County’s greatest assess is the creativity and talent of its citizens.  The County encourages and assists local entrepreneurs to develop and market their products.  Most are home based businesses, but many have the potential to expand and generate new jobs in the community.

Future Potential Based on Use of the Railroad:  As the rail line is renovated and freight service is reinstated, the County will continue to strengthen its targeting strategies to include industries requiring rail, water resources, and land.
